Slantwise Convection in the Irminger Sea

چکیده
The subpolar North Atlantic is a site of significant carbon dioxide, oxygen, and heat exchange with the atmosphere. This exchange, which regulates transient climate change prevents large-scale hypoxia throughout Atlantic, thought to be mediated by vertical mixing in ocean's surface mixed layer. Here we present observational evidence that waters deeper than conventionally defined layer are affected directly atmospheric forcing this region. When northerly winds blow along Irminger Sea's western boundary current, Ekman response pushes denser water over lighter water, potentially triggering slantwise convection. We estimate down-front wind four times stronger air–sea flux buoyancy can mix several depth. Slantwise convection not included most ocean models, likely limits their ability accurately represent mass transformations deep ventilation.

Irminger Sea deep convection injects oxygen and anthropogenic carbon to the ocean interior
Deep convection in the subpolar North Atlantic ventilates the ocean for atmospheric gases through the formation of deep water masses. Variability in the intensity of deep convection is believed to have caused large variations in North Atlantic anthropogenic carbon storage over the past decades, but observations of the properties during active convection are missing. Here we document the origin,...

cement is an essential ingredient in the concrete buildings. for production of cement considerable amount of fossil fuel and electrical energy is consumed. on the other hand for generating one tone of portland cement, nearly one ton of carbon dioxide is released. it shows that 7 percent of the total released carbon dioxide in the world relates to the cement industry. considering ecological issu...
Feeding and reproduction of Calanus finmarchicus during non-bloom conditions in the Irminger Sea
Simultaneous ingestion and egg production experiments were conducted with female Calanus finmarchicus in April/May and July/August 2002 in the Irminger Sea. Experimental animals were provided with natural microplankton food assemblages and incubated under in situ conditions for 24 h. The quantity of food consumed was significantly related to the concentration of prey cells, with total daily ing...

Surface and deepwater paleoclimate records in Irminger Sea core SO82-5 (59øN, 31 øW) and Icelandic Sea core PS2644 (68øN, 22øW) exhibit large fluctuations in thermohaline circulation (THC) from 60 to 18 calendar kyr B.P., with a dominant periodicity of 1460 years from 46 to 22 calendar kyr B.P., matching the DansgaardOeschger (D-O) cycles in the Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 (GISP2) temperature...
